Area Information

Facing a mix of high taxes, political unrest and unpopular wars, a group of Italian farming families set out to build a new life in the United States in 1895. Father Pietro Bandini served as the unofficial leader of the group.

He recommended the future townsite as their new home because of the good climate and inexpensive land prices. After he purchased a plot of land in the area, approximately 40 Italian families followed suit in late 1898. The first winter after their arrival was a difficult one. The men worked in the Oklahoma mines to raise money and hunted for local wildlife to keep their families fed.

When spring arrived, the immigrants used their knowledge of farming to grow a bountiful crop of fruits and vegetables. With food and cash now in ample supply, the town celebrated its successful harvest with the first Grape Festival in the autumn of 1899, a tradition that continues to this day.

Tontitown was incorporated in 1909 and Father Bandini became its first mayor. With the arrival of the railroad in 1912, its economic future was assured.
